Some of the equipment onboard:

Safety equipment – as per the ARC 2023 requirements – see the World Cruising Club website. Similar requirements are also listed in the Safety Equipment section of the 2023 Reed’s Nautical Almanac.

Galley – propane stove with three burners, propane oven, induction hotplate, dual sinks with fresh and salt water foot pumps and a fresh water faucet with hot water (when available). We do almost all our cooking on the induction hotplate, using electricity we generate from our solar panel. Propane is used primarily for baking, and the propane tank we filled in La Gomera in October is still being used 7 months later. On the very few occasions when we have had a lower level of charge in our batteries or when it is cold out (back in Europe), we use the propane stove to cook as well.

Comfort – Hot water heater that heats either when the motor is run or when attached to electricity in a harbor; Spectra Ventura Deluxe 150 GPD watermaker 12v DC (25 liter/hour); 400 Ah lithium battery main bank, 160 Ah litihium battery secondary bank, additional lead acid start battery; Daewoo Mini Washing Machine 3 kg; Sirocco II fans for keeping cool; a Ryobi wet and dry vacuum cleaner that runs off of batteries that we can charge from our solar cells. All our electrical tools are Ryobi with interchangeable batteries.

Sailing – Lulu is a cutter, so she has both a genoa and cutter sails in front of the main mast. We have an extra genoa onboard and also a North Sails Tradewind sail for downwind sailing. The mast has electric furling as does the genoa, and the downwind sail has a torsion line that is very easy to operate even under full sail. We have both an electric autopilot and a Hydrovane windvane, as well as a spare electric autopilot. In heavy winds, we tend to use the cutter sail as our storm sail, together with a reefed mainsail.

Nuts about sailing

Meet Magnus and Jodi

Magnus has been sailing all his life, starting with small sailing dinghys and graduating to larger sailboats. Jodi started sailing when she met Magnus in 2016. As Jodi has taken various certifications, Magnus has joined the classes, collecting stamps in their little blue sailing passport books issued by the Swedish Council for the Education and Training of Yachtsmen (NFB, Nämden för båtlivsutbildning). They both hold Offshore Yachtmaster certification (Utsjöskeppare) and various other certifications.

Magnus is a partner in an engineering company he founded with three friends, and Jodi has worked in banking and financial services. Lulu will be Magnus 4th boat. His first boat “Agnes”, a Magnifik Midget 23, was co-owned with friends. The second, “Mermaid”, was a 30-foot Nardus (similar to a Ballad). Third has been Ocean Queen, a 35-foot Beneteau Oceanis. All of the boats have been adopted into the family retaining their original names or a slight variation, we separated Oceanqueen into two words Ocean Queen; and we will drop the Lady and just call our new boat Lulu.

When they aren’t sailing, Magnus is an avid hobby musician and can play a large range of instruments. Jodi is an instructor at a local gym teaching both dance classes and group weightlifting.

Sailing Dreams

Magnus has long held a dream of sailing to the Whitsunday Islands in Australia, where he spent time backpacking many years ago. After summers sailing, numerous classes, discussions with sailing friends and lots of binge-watching YouTube sailors like Magic Carpet Sailing, Sailing Uma, Ran Sailing and Ryan and Sophie; it is time to take the plunge!

Our Planned Route

We sailed from Sweden on 25 June 2023 and joined the November 2023 ARC from Las Palmas; arriving in Saint Lucia on 11 December 2023. Since then we have sailed the Caribbean Sea and plan to head through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean in November or December 2024. From there, we don’t know. Stay tuned!

More About LulU

Lulu is a “Finn Flyer Passad 38” built in Finland at Polar Yachts in 1991 by Stig Johansson, who was a boatbuilding contractor for Nautor (Swan) and Baltic boats. She is based upon an Olle Enderlein design and is intended for blue water cruising by two people, and according to information from the builders she is built to withstand a longships somersault. There are only a few Finn Flyer Passad 38 boats in existence, Lulu is #3. Why did we change her name from “Lady Lulu” to just “Lulu”? It came from practicing distress calls and other radio requests – try saying “Lady Lulu” three times in a row and you will understand!
