One of the hardest things for me to learn about sailing is that it is about the journey, not the destination. The first few years when Magnus was trying to teach me how to sail, I was impatient to get to the destination. But sailing is about – sailing. So on Saturday we decided to try to sail over to Skagen, Denmark; the forecast had good winds, and we got an early start. But after we got out onto the open water, our winds were either headwinds or only a couple of knots. We tried tacking and travelled at 1-2 knots for a bit waiting for the wind to pick back up, and finally decided that we would head back to the lovely natural harbor at Bäckevik where we had been anchored at Midsommar. Denmark is still there, we will sail there another day when the winds are more in our favor. And we would have sailed back in a thunderstorm which wasn’t in the forecast on our way out, so we were doubly glad we returned. In Bäckevik harbor were two boats from Germany, a Danish Boat, a Norwegian Boat and even an American Boat that came all the way from Seattle. We had to row over with a package of cookies and say “hi”, not often you see folks from the US here, and we had a nice chat. I know I keep saying it, but I truly love how people are so friendly when sailing.
