The sails on Lulu are in great shape even if a few years old, but since we are going to be using them fairly hard in the coming ocean crossings, we wanted to have them reviewed by a sailmaker to ensure that any needed repairs were made. There are many sail lofts in Gothenburg, and we had excellent responses from most all we contacted for quotes. In the end we chose North Sails, because they are making our new downwind sail and it was very convenient that they picked up all the sails when they came and measured the boat.
The spinnaker has only been sailed once to our knowledge and was noted “like new” after the review, we are going to try and sail it a bit to see if it works for us. Although we plan on using our new downwind sail as much as possible, the spinnaker may add some extra speed in very light winds. We may try to re-pack it, so take a bit less space, as we will have a lot of sails with us! There is a spare genua; plus our main, genua, cutter, spinnaker and the new downwind sail.
Now our sails just have a little bit mildew from being rolled up when damp, so we will try to wash them as well when we hang them back up. Since we aren’t actively sailing right now, we are keeping the sails at home to prevent even more mildew.
